Welcome to my 1981 Volvo 244 TURBO page!
In the end of March 2008, I´ve
recevied a message from a friend of mine, Jan. He was a in possession of a
maroon metallic 1981 244 TURBO, in very good condition.
Due to personal reasons, he wanted to sell the car. This is the the story of how
I´ve got my second 244 TURBO.
In 2001 I was driving on a road not
far from Volvo Cars in Torslanda, Gothenburg. in the backmirror I recognized a
familiar view: ther front of a 240 TURBO.
I let the car pass me so I could take a look at it, and what I saw was a fairly
good car in great condition except for the rims. They were painted maroon, same
as the car.
Fortunately I´ve got the registration plate written down, so I contacted the
owner, an older gentlemen in northern Gothenburg. He was reluctant in the
beginning, but after he´d assured himself that my intention was only due to my
interrest of this great car type, he informed breifly about the car. It used to
be a test car at Volvo, it has been on frontpage of the Volvo magazine "RATTEN"
and he was the xxx owner. When our conversation come to an end, I said to him
that if he ever wonder to sell, please let me know.
Few years later, I placed a bid for a manifold to a B21ET, brand new NOS. I won
the auction and to my happiness the seller lived in Gothenburg. We agreed about
a place, which were at the parkinglot were he lived. He was fixing the brakes at
the car. Judge by my suprise when I saw which car it was: the very same maroon
car I saw a couple of years earlier.
The new owner, my friend Jan, told
me that the former owner was his neighbour and due to sickness the car had been
parked for years (approx by the time I saw it). Jan had seen it at the parking
lot and every day, and by a co-incident he was offered to buy the car. Which he
did.
Me and Jan had conact via the Svenska 200 Klubben, and met a couple of times. I
said to him that if he ever wanted to sell, CALL ME!!!
Now, in the end of March I received an message from Jan. He was now ready to
sell, and I was offered to buy.
The car had gain some rust, but not
too much. It had some remarks from Svensk Bilprovning, but none too serious. But,
the starting the car was a problem, when it was started it ran bad.
The fuelgauge was broken, which means that also the fuel-pump in gastank was out
of order as well. That excplained the problem starting the car.
Also the KNUTKORS was really bad, and I need to check the TURBO.
But, now to the good part: the car is exacly the one I´ve been looking for. An
early 1981 TURBO, preferebly with history. It is red maroon (I really wanted the
silver) but the red colour will do nicely. It have the silver plysch interior (preserved
by an blue and grey RSPORT upholstery), electrical controlled mirrors and
windows, air-condition and differental brake.
The body is not so damaged by rust, but some repair needs to be done. It have
only run 210000 kilometers. Sometimes the gearbox jinx, but I know why, so it is
fixed quite easy.
The master plan for now to keep it stored at it is. Due to lack of space in my garage, I can not sqeeze it in. But when it is possible, I will fix the rust, and the mechanical problems, give it a new paint and just enjoy the car. And yeah, I will not repaint the rims. The paintjob is first class job, and now I actually think they look great. I´m getting older, right.
Here is some images from after I picked up the car. More is to come when I´ve released the car from its sleep.
